You can Call me AL or ALE…but not “ALEC!”

You can Call me AL or ALE…but not “ALEC!”

From an article published by Nick Surgey at PRWatch: “ALEC Who?” ALEC Has an Identity Crisis

The American Legislative Exchange Council is trying to change their image and in accomplishing that they would rather toss away the acronym “ALEC” – they’ve been known by and operating under for forty years now – than change their activities.  Four decades they have been secretly meeting, writing pro-corporate legislation and disseminating it throughout America and of late, the world.  Their “International Relations Task Force” includes U.S. state lawmakers and eighteen or nineteen foreign elected officials.  This IRTF is responsible for submitting resolutions and proposed model legislation that has subsequently become law in several U.S. states, so they can now proudly add “Interference with International Policy and Procedures” to their corrupt resume.

Journalist Nick Surgey recently joined the Center for Media and Democracy and writes about the attempt made by ALEC to alter their image in this revealing article published today.  We have to now await anxiously for ALEC to “reveal” their entirely new, squeaky clean “corporate personae”…so we can continue to expose their activities and track their corrupt legislative efforts state by state…

Pictures from ALEC’s 2011 meeting in Phoenix and 2012 Spring Summit in Charlotte that drew hundreds of protesters is the image they are trying to leave behind:

North Carolina Governor Guts Unemployment Insurance–VIDEO

The first GOP Governor to be elected in NC in over 20 years, just six weeks in office, signed a law that will gut the state’s unemployment insurance.  It’s textbook Republican economics.

This goes directly to the post Governor McCrory: Try living on $350 a week  written by Kevin Rogers at ActionNC which has been posted earlier on this site.

Note the statement from Bob Rucho, R-ALEC.

And remember that in NC Thom Tillis, speaker of the House, is R-ALEC.

And Phil Berger, leader of the Senate, is R-ALEC.

VA GOP Shameless in Drive To Rig Elections – VIDEO

VA Senate Forces Through New District Maps

editor’s note:  It takes two articles to explain what happened in the Virginia Senate today.  In all of 40 minutes, GOP Senators took advantage of the absence of a Democratic Senator to gerrymander the Commonwealth’s districts to make it impossible for Democrats to win in VA–both in State and National elections.  Under this plan, Romney would have taken more electoral votes out of Virginia than Obama would.

Included here is a report from roanoke.com with the details of how this was done.

Then there is a video from The Rachel Maddow Show talking about today’s events but from wider and deeper angles.

Three things about this event really bother me.

1.  The relationships in the General Assembly are undoubtedly poisoned beyond the point of no return.

2.  How could Democrats actually believe a Republican promise that was not in writing–signed, notarized, and entered into the public record?  Remember, this is the state of Governor Ultrasound.

3.  And perhaps the worst–“it’s just not fair”.  NOT FAIR?  Prone to understatement are we?  Show some damn outrage!  If you are going to fight this, start your fight immediately.

2012 Voting Machines Altering Votes

Please watch the video at http://youtu.be/Fg6DvjfLz5Q

My wife and I went to the voting booths this morning before work. There were 4 older ladies running the show and 3 voting booths that are similar to a science fair project in how they fold up. They had an oval VOTE logo on top center and a cartridge slot on the left that the volunteers used to start your ballot.

I initially selected Obama but Romney was highlighted. I assumed it was being picky so I deselected Romney and tried Obama again, this time more carefully, and still got Romney. Being a software developer, I immediately went into troubleshoot mode. I first thought the calibration was off and tried selecting Jill Stein to actually highlight Obama. Nope. Jill Stein was selected just fine. Next I deselected her and started at the top of Romney’s name and started tapping very closely together to find the ‘active areas’. From the top of Romney’s button down to the bottom of the black checkbox beside Obama’s name was all active for Romney. From the bottom of that same checkbox to the bottom of the Obama button (basically a small white sliver) is what let me choose Obama. Stein’s button was fine. All other buttons worked fine.

I asked the voters on either side of me if they had any problems and they reported they did not. I then called over a volunteer to have a look at it. She him hawed for a bit then calmly said “It’s nothing to worry about, everything will be OK.” and went back to what she was doing. I then recorded this video.

There is a lot of speculation that the footage is edited. I’m not a video guy, but if it’s possible to prove whether a video has been altered or not, I will GLADLY provide the raw footage to anyone who is willing to do so. The jumping frames are a result of the shitty camera app on my Android phone, nothing more.

Dead Voters & Fraudulent Claims – Desperation to Disenfranchise Voters in NC – VIDEO

Veronica Degraffenreid, elections liason for the North
Carolina State Board of Elections, talks with Rachel
Maddow about the burden on the election boards in her state to address the frivolous claims of dead voters on the rolls by a tea party group called the Voter Integrity Project.

To date, neither the state nor any of the county boards have found any instances of anyone voting who should not have.

We have not found any instances of voter fraud” after hundreds of hoursand how much money–of researching the Tea Party claim, instead of preparing for the elections as they are charged to do.

This can be tracked to True The Vote efforts.  The Tea Party movement out to Texas to intimidate and try to scare people for  registering or voting.

VIP is categorized in the media as a non-partisan non-profit organization according to their web site and claims in their actions.

But they are not listed with the state as a non-profit; they are actually registered with the state as a business.  After being challenged, they have removed their claims of being a non-profit.

Veronica Degraffenreid says what VIP is doing is
unprecedented.  They are winding down their research as VIP did not have all of the necessary data required to make a decision if any given person was deceased–as is already done by the state’s HHS Department.

No instances have been found of anyone trying to vote under the name of someone deceased.  It proves that the NC voter rolls are indeed sound.

Voter Protection or Voter Suppression? 8min – VIDEO

This video looks at the voter protection bills that have
been proposed in over 40 states. On the surface these
laws seem logical, but as we dig into the reasoning and
people who created them, we see that they are being
pushed in the name of voter suppression.

And “All roads lead to ALEC”.

‘Workers’ Rights Are Human Rights’

On Up with Chris Hayes, the entire first hour was devoted to the role of unions in the economy, its tenuous relationship with partisan politics and the how the diminishing union participation has hurt the average American worker.

Union member Saladin Muhammad reminds viewers that workers’ rights are in fact, human rights, providing workers with the dignity of honest pay, benefits and safety in the workplace.

ALEC Under Fire – VIDEO

Published on Jul 27, 2012 by PRWatch

July 25, 2012 — KSTU Television FOX 13, Salt Lake City,

UT — Max Roth reporting:

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), an
organization that has taken center stage in a national
debate over the proper roles of government and business,
is meeting in Salt Lake City to cheers from a number of
Republican Utah lawmakers and protests from many
national non-profits and local activists.

ALEC brings state lawmakers from around the country
together with corporate sponsors and some conservative
interest groups. They cite free market interests as their
prime mission and they call themselves bi-partisan.

In recent years, however, ALEC has lost the majority of its
Democratic members and in the past year a number of
corporate sponsors have fled as well.

Lisa Graves, the executive director of the Center for
Media and Democracy came to Utah to protest.

“They [ALEC] vote on model legislation behind closed
doors without the press, without people like you or the
public present and then those state legislators come out to
their state house and introduce those bills cleansed from
any fact that they were pre-voted on by corporate
lobbyists,” Graves said.
