Education Task Force

Which CEO made $5 million stealing your kid’s lunch money?

ALEC is working to ensure that public education dollars get diverted to private profits. Their approach is working — for them. Not so much for the students who pay the price in the form of a subpar education and poor performance.

Conservatives say welfare for poor people is a problem that needs to be addressed.  How can children become independent without a good public education?  Corporations should NOT be profiting from the education of our children.  This is the last big pot of money that corporations are after.  ALEC is trying to help state legislatures hand our public education over to the profiteers with our tax dollars.

A Smart ALEC Threatens Public Education

Coordinated efforts to introduce model legislation aimed at defunding and dismantling public schools is the signature work of this conservative organization.

…Today, ALEC calls this approach “choice” and renames vouchers “scholarships,” but its aim is clear: De-fund and dismantle public schools. While many other right-wing organizations support this agenda, ALEC is the mechanism for implementing it through its many pieces of model legislation that propose legislative methods for de-funding public schools, particularly low-income, urban schools.

The motivation for dismantling the public education system—creating a system where schools do not provide for everyone—is ideological, and it is motivated by profit. The corporate members on ALEC’s education task force include representatives from the Friedman Foundation, Goldwater Institute, Evergreen Education Group, Washington Policy Center, and corporations providing education services such as Sylvan Learning and K-12, Inc. All stand to benefit from public funding sent in their direction.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Cuts Ties to ALEC

This is a lot more than the standard ColorOfChange/Common Cause “get out of jail free” card.  This is very significant not only of the action itself, but if you follow the links to some of the individuals who will be taking over this task force…Watch Out!

“The national certifying body for teachers in the United States, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), participated in the Education Task Force of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) until April 2012.

“New members of ALEC’s Education Task Force as of the upcoming Spring Task Force meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina this month are the James Madison Institute (JMI) of Florida and the Pioneer Institute of Massachusetts, both members of the Koch-funded State Policy Network of right wing state think tanks. JMI has partnered with the Foundation for Excellence in Education (FEE), another ALEC member whose chairman is former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. In 2008, FEE and JMI co-hosted a “national summit on education reform” in Florida focused on increased testing, school privatization, and charter schools.”
