DeMint’s Bold Plan for Heritage: How to Lie More Effectively

Former Sen. Jim DeMint, hero to the overlapping Tea Party and Religious Right wings of the Republican Party, was kindly granted space by the Washington Post to tell us what he plans to do in his new job at the Heritage Foundation.

DeMint, a former ad man, promises to launch a “conservative revival” by figuring out how to do a better job selling conservative policies to the American public. That’s not exactly a big shift for the folks at Heritage, which is and always has been a giant marketing operation for right-wing “ideas.”

The most revealing thing in DeMint’s column is his use of a thoroughly debunked lie that Republicans tried to use against President Obama in last year’s campaign.  Says DeMint of President Obama, “He disabled welfare reform last year, when he took away the work requirements that were at the heart of that law’s success.”

That false claim earned politicians like Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum “Pants on Fire” ratings from Politifact and similar ratings from other fact checkers.  It’s a gross distortion of an Obama administration decision to give states more flexibility to come up with new ways to meet the law’s work requirements – something sought by Republican governors.  Even some Republicans, including one architect of welfare reform, called the charge false when the Romney campaign made it.

As we know from his climate change denialism, DeMint isn’t as concerned about truth as about creating his own reality — the way Fox News and the right-wing echo chamber have tried to do.  “One lesson I learned in marketing is that, for consumers and voters, perception is reality.”

Maybe reporters should start referring to Heritage as a “perception tank.”

Mass-Murder Etiquette 101 — Republican Style

What a difference a mass-murder of kindergartners makes…

…especially on the heels of Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly on America Live joining in the conservative clamour calling for NBC Sports to fire Bob Costas for daring to inappropriately suggest during half-time that it’s time for our nation to have a serious conversation about gun violence.

Last Friday, the day of the Sandy Hook School mass-murder, the NRA Twitter feed fell suddenly silent — save for the very angry tweets directed at the organization. Among them we find:

@NRA Please never tweet again

On the tenth day of Christmas the @NRA gave to me, an elementary school slaughter More →

Another Voting Rights Victory in Ohio: Restoration of Early Voting on the Weekend Before the Election

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruledon Friday that Ohio must make early voting during the three days before the election available to all voters if it’s available to military members and voters who live overseas. The ruling upheld a lower court’s decision.  The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling is available here [PDF].

…In late August, U.S. District Court Judge Peter Economus ruled against the Ohio Republicans and ordered that their restrictions on Early Voting for all, in those three days, be immediately lifted.

Sec. of State Husted attempted to work around that order, issuing a directive to county election officials, instructing them that they didn’t need to set new hours for voting during that weekend, because he intended to appeal Economus’ ruling.

Economus was not happy and ordered Husted to personally appear before him. A chastened Husted filed a motion apologizing to the court in early September.

…Husted has claimed he believes in uniform voting standards across the state. If so, he could issue a directive ordering all counties to open their doors over the weekend before the election for liberal access to voting for all.

Todd Akin (R-MO) Says Rape Victims Can ‘Shut Down’ Pregnancies

Watch video on the VLTPVideoChannel http://youtu.be/fetFNTgqE6o

Akin is perhaps the boldest among a crop of conservative 2012 nominees who could hamper GOP efforts to take back the Senate in the fall. Akin has called for an end to the school-lunch program and a total ban on the morning-after pill. [..]

Nor is this Akin’s first time suggesting some types of rape are more worthy of protections than others. As a state legislator, Akin voted in 1991 for an anti-marital-rape law, but only after questioning whether it might be misused “in a real messy divorce as a tool and a legal weapon to beat up on the husband,” according to a May 1 article that year in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The PollTracker Average shows Akin leading McCaskill by a margin of 49.7 percent to 41.3 percent.YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!

Jedediah Bila: Women Vote Democratic Because They Want a “Daddy”

When she’s not tweeting nonsense, Jedediah Bila is one of Fox News’ favorite go-to “real feminists are Republicans” spokespersons. And while on “Fox & Friends” discussing why women are lazy, dependent dupes going to yet again vote for Democrats in November for the 142nd straight election, she did what she’s paid to do.

BILA: Well I think historically, if you look back through all the elections throughout time, women have gone Democrat, they do lean Democrat. I think that’s because in a large part the feminist movement has been telling women for a long time that Democrats are their alley [sic], ally, and somehow these big government policies have become their friend. They have sort of exchanged the values of self-sufficiency and autonomy in favor of government dependence. Instead of relying on men, now they’re relying on government to be their big daddy or whatever you want to call it.

ACLU Challenge to Photo ID Ballot Measure May Succeed in MN Supreme Court, Yet Fail in Court of Public Opinion

Thanks to a failed MSM and timid DoJ, most Americans do not realize true purpose of voter suppressing photo ID laws…

[note:  this is perhaps the finest reporting that I have seen on Voter Suppression]

It is ironic that so many citizens in the Land of 10,000 Lakes — as high as 80% — would still be taken in by the thick layer of lies that surround the ALEC/GOP push for voter suppressing photo ID laws. After all, it was Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) who so thoroughly demolished the credibility of GOP “voter fraud” salesman Hans Von Spakovsky and his “voter fraud” canard during the September 2011 hearings before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Human Rights. The hearings were convened in response to the billionaire Koch brothers-funded, Paul Weyrich co-founded American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC)-fueled GOP effort to enact new state voting restrictions across the country.

If a majority of Minnesotans either watched Franken’s demolition of the “voter fraud” canard on C-SPAN during the September 2011 Senate hearings or read The BRAD BLOG with any regularity at all, they would realize that polling place photo ID restrictions have nothing to do with preventing “voter fraud” and everything to do with disproportionately disenfranchising poor, elderly, student and minority citizens.

But, alas, the vast majority of U.S. citizens have neither watched the C-SPAN video of the September 2011 hearings nor read any of nearly ten years of articles at The BRAD BLOG. The vast majority are bombarded daily, on the other hand, by an all-pervasive right-wing media that entails not only Fox “News” and right-wing radio, but multiple right-wing newspapers and think tanks — all of whom have no problem at all repeating the lies in service of what they see as the greater good: holding or obtaining political power.
